First Batch of Plants Settle in the Greenhouse: Planting Work in the Botanic Garden Officially a Go
With seven tropical plants settled in the Botanic Garden of Beijing Expo 2019, the “Kaleidoscope” has entered a key planting stage, and the highly-anticipated tropical greenhouse will “house” more than 1,000 species and over 10,000 rare plants.
Executive Deputy Director Zhou Jianping of the Bureau of Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition Coordination highly praised the construction progress of the Botanic Garden. He said that the “kaleidoscope” project was the first non-government project officially approved for the Beijing Expo 2019, and it was the one of the core buildings of the expo’s “four halls and one heart”. Once the expo opens its doors, visitors will be able to appreciate the wisdom, power, contributions and beauty of plants in the garden.
Ding Changfeng, Senior Vice President of Vanke Group and Director of the Botanic Garden, provided a detailed introduction about the construction works. He urged all involved parties to complete the project with high standards and quality. According to Director Ding, the “kaleidoscope” would be a unique garden to the visitors. It will tell the special stories of plants and showcase their vivid side. Now that the Botanic Garden has entered its 100-day countdown, Ding thanked all the teams and hoped that everyone would work together to help make the garden a real “kaleidoscope” with their original love for protecting and caring about plants.
After Ding’s briefings, Zhou Jianping, Wu Gang, Zhang Lannian, Wu Shijiang, Ding Changfeng, Wang Hui, Zhao Shiwei and Wang Jinman jointly filled the soil foundation for the first batch of plants at the greenhouse. There were seven plants, including the beautiful “big-belly ceiba” (Ceiba insignis), the oldest pinggan tree (Brachychiton acerifalius) and the elegant lotus mist (Syzygium samarangense). The maitreya tree with a diameter of 1.5 meters at breast height drew the most attention. In the future, more types of tropical plants will settle in the garden, which are worth looking forward to!
100-day Countdown of Completion for the “Kaleidoscope”: We Are Almost There
The “Kaleidoscope” Botanic Garden Project is located on the southwest side of the expo park. It is adjacent to the China Pavilion in the east and the Expo Town in the north. The project covers an area of 3.9 hectares and has a construction area of 10,606 square meters. It is expected to be a comprehensive exhibition hall covering plant greenhouse, exhibition space, leisure service space, and so much more.
During the event, under the guidance of Director Ding of the Botanic Garden, Executive Deputy Director Zhou of the expo bureau and other guests took an on-site inspection of the construction works of the garden. So far, 75% of the seedling planting and featured structure of the garden’s outdoor landscape has been completed. The main steel structure of the venue has been completed, and the primary interior fit-up will be started next month. About 60% of the earthwork for tropical greenhouse has been completed. As planting progresses, the curtain walls of greenhouse will be completely closed in mid-September.
